Beyond the Plate Recipe Contest!
Join us for the Beyond the Plate Recipe Competition to win great prizes!
Celebrate the upcoming Nutrition Month with Residence Life and UBC/UBCO Food Services by submitting an original, plant-based recipe video or photo essay. Whether it’s a recipe for a hearty meal or a simple on-the-go snack, a new recipe or a time-tested tradition passed down in your family, we’d love to see it!
Applications are now closed. Thanks to all who applied!
Why should you enter?
You’ll be entered into a draw for three great prizes, valued up to $50 each! Five finalists will be selected from each of the streams (video and photo essay). If you are selected as one of the finalists, you’ll receive all of the following prizes:
- $50 gift card for Save-On Foods
- $50 gift card for PlantSome
Plus, you’ll have an opportunity to provide us with more information about your recipe and its background, parts of which will be included in the Beyond the Plate Final Showcase.
Students and other members of the UBC community will have the opportunity to view the Showcase videos and photo essays, and then vote on their favourite – if your video or photo essay is selected as the winner, in addition to bragging rights, you will receive a prize valued up to $150, and your recipe may be featured in a UBC dining hall in September!
How To Enter A Recipe
Video
- Record a roughly two- to three-minute (or less, if you want!) video showing us how to make your recipe.
- Upload your video to YouTube (see below for some useful how-to links!)
- Submit your recipe video, and tell us how the recipe connects with the Thrive 5, five evidence-based ways to foster and maintain good mental health!
Make sure to include your recipe video link in the submission form!
There are some great introductory videos about filming and editing videos on this channel, including this one to get your started.
You can download and use Camtasia, which is a very user-friendly video editing software – it is freely available to UBC students; the instructions for downloading can be found here.
VEED is a popular online video editing software/website – it’s free to try for videos up to 10 minutes in length (we’re only asking for less than 3 minutes!).
Here is a video that shows you how to upload to YouTube.
And if video editing just isn’t your thing, use this as a chance to connect with friends or others in your community who might want to help out!
Photo Essay
- Take 5 to 10 photos of the steps in your recipe.
- Number each photo in the order you would like them to appear.
- Create a text-only document of your recipe in as much detail as you think is needed, up to 500 words – be sure to include the number of each photo where it should be included.
- Submit your recipe video, and tell us how the recipe connects with the Thrive 5, five evidence-based ways to foster and maintain good mental health!
Essentially, you are telling us the story of how to make your recipe, using a combination of words and photos. You can even take your photos using your phone; no special equipment required!
There are some good examples of recipe photo essays here:
