FAQs

UBCO Food Services hires mostly Ongoing Sessional Employees. What does this mean?

Sessional positions are ongoing, salaried appointments hired for 8 months of the year with a 4 month layoff period during the slower periods. These positions usually run as per the busy University school schedule, the end of August until the end of April each year, with a guaranteed position each sessional year.

I’m interested in a position on an "as needed" (casual) basis. Do you hire for these types of positions?

Yes, we hire contract term Auxiliary positions as needed in our department at various locations on campus. A part-time auxiliary appointment is one which involves less than 35 hours of work per week for a period of less than 12 consecutive months. Some Auxiliary positions have set hours weekly, while others are hired to be on an on-call basis and only require an availability form for contact windows. If you are interested in one of these positions, apply with the ‘Auxiliary’ button above and tell us a little bit of what you are looking for including your availability.

Do you hire students?

Yes, we usually post our student auxiliary positions sometime in late July/early August for the Fall semester and any available positions for the winter semester in late November/early December. Keep an eye on our careers page for available postings! If we are currently not hiring, you can always send us your application and availability just in case something does come available by applying with the ‘Auxiliary’ button above.

What are the wages for each position and relating terms as per your union BCGEU Collective Agreement?

Wages and terms of UBCO Food Services can be found in our current Collective Agreement HERE. Please see page 74 for the Food Services LOU, and wages starting on page 77.

When will you be doing interviews and hiring?

We’ll begin doing interviews in the first half of June and continuing through July and August until fully hired..

What shifts will be available for new staff?

Shifts for the fall and winter semesters will be made available for each classification pool through shift bids, in seniority order as per our BCGEU Collective Agreement. Once shifts have been confirmed with our current staff, remaining shifts will be made available to new employees, in the order of their final recruited date. Aside from employees hired specifically for our franchise locations, as a UBCO Food Services employee, you may select your shift from any in-house location shift bids left available. Staff pick their shifts based on seniority. Once hired, where possible you will have the opportunity to decide your shift based on the remaining shift still available. Shifts for full-time employees are 35 hours a week, 5 days or nights on, and 2 days off, always side-by-side. Part-time employee shift times do vary based on operational needs.
